Cyndi Lauper – At Last

Cyndi Lauper
Artist: Cyndi Lauper
Title: At Last
Label: Sony
Rating: 4.5/10

Our Line: Cyndi Lauper does her best impression of the standards.

The Good:
“My Baby Just Cares For Me” – Brilliant. Lauper proves that she has more than that squawk-ish girly voice.

The Average:
“You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” – You can taste the emotion.
“Unchained Melody” – This is one of the hardest songs to tackle. Cyndi takes it on only it’s too bad she sounds so trepid.
“At Last” – Lauper can’t belt it out but is missing that musty, growl that only Etta James and few others could bring.
“La Vie En Rose” – Timid.
“On The Sunny Side Of The Street” – This is what Cyndi Lauper sounds like doing her best impression of No Doubt.

The Ugly:
“Walk On By” – She has her occasions of high and glorious note taking but when it comes down to it there are many areas where Lauper sounds like she is going to lose her grip.
“Makin’ Whoopee” – She is painfully out of her element here. Lauper sounds like she is sleeping walking through this.

Frankly: Cyndi Lauper is screaming “look at me, I’m all grown up.” At Last isn’t a coming of age party for Lauper. It is a chance for her to show us what we knew all along; Lauper can sing. It’s too bad Cyndi Lauper stinks at doing cover songs.
