JT Money – Interview

JT Money

We’ve got the questions.

jt has the answers.

What do you think about the success of the single “Who Dat”?

I’m loving it. It’s like phenomenal for me. It’s unexpected. (laughs) So, it’s real cool.

What inspired the track?

The track pretty much started the whole record. Tricky was just doing what he do, and that’s make music, and that’s how it just came out hot like that. Tricky was just doing the track itself and started the hook, and the music inspired the whole concept of the record.

You probably knew that “Who Dat” was going to be a club hit, but did you think that it would crossover into commercial success?

I expected it to be a club hit, but crossing over and going pop and stuff was like ‘wow’, and good for me.

And your video was making it fun or was it a lot of work?

That video was kind of fun. It was work though ’cause they kept calling, and as soon as they told us to take a break, they call you right back because they forgot to get something else. But the final product was something that I could appreciate.

You had some time off from the last record you put out until now. Was that time in between frustrating to you or did you just make it a positive?

Well, it was sort of frustrating. But then, I don’t really let anything get to me like that. I just kept making songs and saying, “When my time comes again…” And I am very confident with the new album. It’s one of the better things that I have done and I think that it is going to be off the chain. And if they are reacting this way for the single, I’m thinking and preparing myself for the album because it is going to be off the chain.

What was it like working with the producers Tricky and Dallas Austin on your album?

That was love because it’s like, these cats are real producers and it’s like they do what they do and pretty much encourage me to do what I do. And the blend between all of us is just much love. But Dallas, he won’t let you leave out of the studio unless you all have some funk, and that’s good and I appreciate that. And he is always trying to better everything. He would say, “J, that is hot, but we can do this here or add this or take that out.”

You had some guest appearances on the album, such as Too Short, Big Gipp. Were these all people who you knew before the album or did you just want to work together?

I knew them all in the Poison Clan days. So it was like when JT Money went solo and we had a bigger budget to work with to get everybody working, and it was no problem making it happen as far as I want you to do this cut or something. Everybody was down with the idea. And it’s the same with me. If any one of those guys came to me for anything, it would be all good. One love.

Are there any tracks on the album that you are particularly proud of?

I’m so proud of the album. I mean, one of my favorites would be “Kite To The Boys”, “On The Grind”.

If you had a motto, what would it be?

Definitely keeping it real. I pride myself on not getting caught up in the game, like I’m no superstar. Because stars fall, and you know it’s true that you are doing big things but remember your folks and I pride myself on that. But it’s still not to the point where I am trying to make anybody else happy. It’s just for me. I like to be real with people because I just can’t be phony. It ain’t in me.

Any plans for a summer tour?

Yes. There is a tour coming up right after I get off a promotional tour. I am supposed to start a paid tour, another tour.

Is this for overseas or for America?

We will eventually head overseas, but this one is for the States, the U.S., and it’s going to be pretty much like a Southern style tour where you might see JT Money, Trick Daddy, Juvenile, 8 Ball, and a package. Something like that. That’s what I heard. That was the offer that was on the table, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Are you excited to be performing again?

Once again, yes. I’ve always liked performing. And whenever I felt like I wasn’t performing was when I felt like I wasn’t doing anything. I just want to tour and give a little back because I am getting a whole lot of love right now. But it is more love than anything and I am just trying to give back.
